ARTIST STATEMENT

We work with gaps in storytelling, filling in the unsaid and uncovering narratives suspended between real and imaginary, facts and speculation. Our method is the archaeology of the unfinished — the restoration of lost meanings and the pursuit of what lingers beyond the boundaries of what has been told.

We treat stories as a material in themselves, as tangible as clay or fabric — something that can be shaped, fractured, layered, or reassembled. We inherit a tradition of rhetorical misdirection and encrypted narration, where finding a way to tell the story — and allowing it to shift, resist, or contradict — becomes a way to take back our and other voices.

Our works can be described as multimedia-essays, where film, images, sound, and performance help to capture personal and collective silences, forging new connections where stories once faltered.

Born to an Afghan father and a Russian mother, Yana spent her childhood moving between three different countries, and this condition of being “in‑between” — between languages, geographies, and cultures — became a formative experience that shaped her artistic intuition. Within these fluid spaces, Yana traces the invisible threads that bind things together and reminds us that no story ever truly ends. Over time, she developed a method of parallel narrative — a storytelling technique in which peripheral threads reshape the central plot. Her six years of teaching Creative Thinking at HSE University, together with her experience as a storytelling podcaster, refined this approach and laid the foundation for an artistic practice that gradually expanded across multiple media.


ANTON KHAMCHISHKIN

At the age of ten, Anton received his first camera, a moment that marked the beginning of his artistic journey. He graduated as a civil engineer but later he turned to visual  art. Formed through hands-on practice on film sets as photographer and cinematographer, he worked on over 20 feature films, shorts, and series including Cannes awarded film directors.

Working together allowed them to merge their different backgrounds in visual art, storytelling and engineering, and formed a practice built on complementarity: parallel ways of seeing, thinking, and constructing stories. This partnership continues to expand their work across new mediums, where their distinct perspectives operate as one.

Their works have been exhibited globally at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (Paris), Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature (Paris), CWB Paris, Loods6 (Amsterdam), silent green Kulturquartier (Berlin), Tempelhof Airport (Berlin), V-A-C Foundation,  Multimedia Art Museum (Moscow), Street Art Museum (Saint Petersburg), etc.

The duo’s  films have been in the official selections and won prizes at Hong Kong Film Festival, DOK Leipzig, Slamdance, Matera Film Festival, Tampere Film Festival, Galway Film Fleadh, Arquiteturas Festival, NewFilmmakers NY, Message to Man. In 2024, they took part in the CNC filmmaking residency in Paris and at the Festival de Cannes.

Twice the duo has been nominated for Moving Image Art Prize during Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin, selected by curators from the Centre Pompidou, MAMCO Geneva, BOZAR Brussels, Kunstinstituut Melly Rotterdam in 2024  as well as from Mudam Luxembourg, CWB Paris, and Tate Modern in 2025.
